About Us

WeCanRow DC was started in 2004 by 3 breast cancer survivors who rowed at 3 different clubs in the Washington area. The first Learn to Row weekend, coached by Holly Metcalf, was held in May 2005 at Capital Rowing Club in Washington, DC. Many of the 15 rowers introduced to the sport that weekend have continued to row together at Potomac Boat Club and/or Capital Rowing Club, joined by the Learn to Row participants from the subsequent years. The WeCanRow DC Learn to Row weekend has become an annual LIVESTRONG event, featuring catered meals, massages and consultation with a physical therapist. In September 2006, Team WeCanRow DC competed for the first time in the Head of the Potomac Regatta, and now participates in local regattas annually. In 2009, WCRDC was represented at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston.  The team trains on land through the winter months, and attends rowing camps and retreats together each year.

WeCanRow DC's mission is to provide new opportunities for breast cancer survivors to heal, both physically and emotionally, by being active participants in their own recovery and part of a mutually empowering team. WeCanRow DC's mission is also to raise awareness within the metropolitan Washington, DC survivor and medical professional community regarding the benefits of rowing for cancer recovery, wellness and a healthy lifestyle, through education, outreach and by being an inspirational presence of strong and confident cancer survivors.

WeCanRow -- National (Women Enduring Cancer Row) was founded by world champion rower, Holly Metcalf, specifically for women who have survived breast cancer. There are now 7 WeCanRow chapters nationwide, including WeCanRow DC.
